About WBS Codes

WBS (Work Breakdown Structure) codes in Proliance allow you to hierarchically specify an alternate way of organizing the planning objects in a schedule. The highest level of the hierarchy represents your workspace, and each branch represents the goals that your tasks are working towards.  These lower branches can be used to sort your planning objects according to higher-level aims or by any means you specify.

In order to use a WBS in your schedule, you must first define your WBS in a hierarchical WBS lookup. Proliance provides five WBS code lookups, which are shared at the workspace level. For more information on managing and editing lookups, see "About the Lookup Editor".

 Example

An example of a WBS code lookup:

INT  International Terminal     1  Plans and Specifications          01   Preliminary P&S          02   Intermediate P&S          03   Final P&S     2   Real Estate          01   Acquisition          02   Litigation          03   Relocation     3   Construction          01   Construction Contract          02   Construction Management          03   Construction Monitoring

An example of WBS codes you would assign to tasks in your schedule:

INT-1.01
for tasks under Preliminary P&S

INT-2
for tasks under Real Estate

Once you have assigned WBS codes to your planning objects, you can apply a filter to the Gantt according to the WBS code to provide you with different views of your progress.

To assign a WBS code lookup to a schedule

  1. Open the Schedules register.
  2. Select the Schedule that you want to assign a WBS lookup to.
  3. Proliance opens the select Schedule document.

  4. On the Main page, expand the WBS section.
  5. In the Active column, select the checkbox next to the WBS code lookup you want to use in the current schedule.
  6. Click Save.
  7. Proliance activates the selected WBS code lookup in the current schedule.

Note:

  • You can preview the available content for a WBS code by clicking the Magnifying Glass icon The magnifying glass icon..
  • A schedule can only use one WBS code lookup at a time.
  • A WBS code can be active in multiple schedules in the same workspace.
  • If you edit your WBS in the lookup after you have assigned WBS codes to planning objects, the planning objects retain their previous codes in the Gantt. Filtering by WBS code will not reflect the new structure unless you manually re-assign the new codes to each planning object.
