Single Versus Multiple Style Layouts in Excel

These are the constraints when inserting XML elements into Excel for single style layouts:

• XML elements should only be added to the first worksheet.
• Only one top level document field can be defined within a row.
• XML elements from item lists that are nested within an item list cannot be inserted.

Example

The following is a simplified illustration of the schema file Meridian.CPL.Cost Control.Workspace Procurement Service.CostEventDocument.xsd.

In this file:

• Lines shown in green represent XML elements that you can insert in both single and multiple style layouts in Excel.
• Lines shown in yellow represent XML elements that you cannot insert in single style layouts in Excel. However, they are acceptable for multiple style layouts.

The reason you cannot insert them is that BudgetLineItemsRow is nested under LineItemsRow.



• If the elements do not print correctly, try repositioning the top level elements in separate rows, within the same column. See below for an example of how a company document's Company Name, Primary Contact, and Primary Location elements are inserted in the worksheet. However item lists should be defined within the same row.
• Elements representing fields within an item list must be in adjacent cells within the same row. Proliance will insert a copy of the row containing the field values for each item in the Item List. See below for an example of how the following fields have been aligned for the main construction divisions of a company document: Description, Level, and Attribute.

• Due to a limitation in the Excel XML format, images cannot be included in Excel layouts when saving your workbook as an XML document. (This limitation does not apply to Word layouts).
• Formulas can be used in an Excel worksheet, but they cannot expand to accommodate the new range of output. For example, if you have a row in your worksheet containing XML elements representing fields for an item list, this will expand into several rows in the final report—one row for each item in the list. Prior to printing (during the preview stage), you may need to edit the excel formula to ensure that it is referencing the correct rows.
• If your formula is not working, try moving it to the side, not below the column (or in the same column) the formula is referencing.

These are the constraints when inserting XML elements into Excel for multiple style layouts:

• XML elements should only be added to the first worksheet.
• Insert the Top Level elements and any Item List elements all within a single row. The layout should resemble the column headings in a register, since the multiple style layout is primarily designed for printing registers. For each Proliance document being printed using this layout, Proliance will insert a copy of this row into the worksheet.
